In diapers, wood pulp (fluff pulp) is one of the key materials for traditional absorbent core. It is primarily used in conjunction with super absorbent polymer (SAP) to achieve rapid absorption, moisture retention and dryness. The following are the specific functions of wood pulp in diapers:

1.Rapid Liquid Absorption

Capillary action: The wood pulp fiber structure is fluffy, forming a porous network that rapidly absorbs urine and distributes it throughout the core, avoiding local saturation.

Distribution: Liquid is quickly transferred to the SAP particles, improving overall absorption efficiency.

2.Support and Distribute SAP

Prevent SAP from clumping: Pure SAP gels and clumps after absorbing water. The network structure of wood pulp fibers disperses SAP particles, ensuring uniform water absorption within the core.

Maintains core structure: Provides loft and elasticity, preventing the core from collapsing after absorbing water, which could affect breathability.

3.Improved Breathability and Comfort

Airflow: The gaps between wood pulp fibers allow air to pass through, reducing stuffiness and lowering the risk of diaper rash. Fluff pulp diapers normally are more breathable.

Soft touch: Premium fluff pulp fibers are delicate, minimizing friction and making them ideal for baby's delicate skin.

4.Environmental Protection and Biodegradability

Naturally biodegradable: Wood pulp is derived from wood and is more easily biodegradable than pure SAP (although diapers still require special treatment due to their composite materials). Most biodegradable baby diapers in market use pulp with SAP for core.

Reducing SAP use: Some eco-friendly diaper brands are reducing their reliance on SAP by increasing the proportion of wood pulp in their products.

Limitations of Wood Pulp

Limited liquid absorption: Wood pulp alone absorbs far less water than SAP (only 5-10 times its own weight in liquid, while SAP can absorb over 30 times).

Deformation: After absorbing water, the fiber structure may loosen, causing the core to break or clump (modern processes improve this through embossing and airtight paper wrapping).
