Nonwovens are fabric-like materials whose fibers are held together and combined by some chemical or mechanical process rather than woven. Nonwovens have a variety of applications in various industries. Wipes (wet wipes) are just one application, usually in the medical or near-medical field. In terms of disposables, the industry has tried to develop flushability standards including dispersibility, but until recently no clear standards have been established, so it is recommended that all manufacturers label non-woven fabrics as “rinse-free”.
What is the difference between flushable and biodegradable materials or wipes?
Some wipes are called “flushable” even though they actually only biodegrade. But wet wipes, even “flushable” wipes, grease and wet wipes tend to stick together, forming a blockage in the sewer, called “grease block”. When flushed into the toilet, it will block the internal pipes and chemical Septic systems and public sewer systems. Additionally, some brands of wipes contain alcohol, which can kill the bacteria and enzymes responsible for breaking down solid waste in your septic tank.
