The Dragon Boat Festival, also called Double Fifth Festival, is celebrated on May 5th on lunarcalendar. It is a folk festival widely spread with a history of over 2,000 years, and is one of the most important Chinese festivals as well, along with the Spring Festival, Tomb-Sweeping Day, and Mid-Autumn Festival. There are various celebrating activities on that day, among which the customs of eating rice dumplings and dragon boat racing are quite important.
In addition to Chinese mainland, many other Asian countries and regions also celebrate this festival. In Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Taiwan, China, it is known as Bak Chang Festival (‘Dumpling Festival’).
The origin of this summer festival centers around a scholarly government official named Qu Yuan，and he is also a great poet.He was a patriotic and respected man, but because of the misdeeds of jealous rivals he eventually fell into disfavor in the emperor’s court.
Unable to regain the respect of the emperor, watching his country falling into enemies, Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mi Low river and killed himself. The local people living adjacent to the Mi Lo River rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the waters to appease the river dragons.
Although they were unable to find Qu Yuan, their efforts are still celebrated today.
