How to distinguish between biodegradable products, recyclable products, and compostable products?

With so many options out there other than sending your trash to the landfill, it’s easy to become confused about the different options available. Sometimes it’s not clear what the best disposal method is, here’s a quick and easy guide on the differences between recyclable, biodegradable and compostable products.

Biodegradable diapers

biodegradable
Biodegradable products are products that break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass in the natural environment within a “reasonable amount of time.” Newclears diapers are biodegradable (61% of their content disappears within 75 days when composted, and Newclears bamboo fiber wipes are 100% biodegradable). So what do you do with biodegradable products? Items marked biodegradable can be disposed of as regular trash. Lovely bamboo diapers will decompose in regular landfills, but it’s important to follow the correct process to start decomposing.

recyclable

Recyclable products are an important process in diverting waste from landfill and are materials that can be collected and reprocessed to create new items using common materials such as paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum and electronic waste. The easiest way to recycle is through your local waste scheme, identified by the universal recycling symbol. It’s worth noting that if too many wrong items (called contaminants) get into the recycling bin, the entire bin will be sent to landfill. Contaminants may include disposable nappies, garden waste, takeaway coffee cups, oil and more.

Compostable

Compostable products are the gold level of biodegradable products. They degrade within a few months in an industrial composting facility, and as they break down, they have the added benefit of releasing valuable nutrients into the soil. If your neighbor doesn’t offer industrial compost, you can dispose of compostable products in a backyard or home composter, but they will take longer to degrade. While Newclears Bamboo Diapers can be composted in small quantities, we recommend sending them to a commercial composting facility. It’s important not to put compostables in recycling – they are not recyclable and can contaminate the recycling process!

Biodegradable bamboo diapers biodegrade 61% of their contents within 75 days in conventional landfills. However, it is important to ensure that they are placed in biodegradable bags or plastic alternatives (no plastic trash bags) to ensure that they begin to decompose.
